In biting 33-degree winds at Tigers Stadium, Pete Turner’s Tylerville
Tigers outlasted Graham Sawness’ Metropolis Monarchs 16–12 behind a
punishing ground game and timely defense, using a 6–0 first quarter and
Dennis Walling’s explosive 13-carry, 124-yard, 1-TD day (9.5 YPC) to
build a 16–6 cushion before holding on through a late Monarchs
field-goal rally. Metropolis moved the ball (285 total yards) but six
sacks and two lost fumbles proved costly, even with kicker Adalberto
Vanmeter drilling all four of his field goals (including a long of 56)
for all 12 points. The MVP was Tigers right cornerback Tom Bennett, who
stuffed the stat sheet with 8 tackles, 1 sack, and 1 fumble recovery,
anchoring a defense that protected the lead when it mattered most.
